Tim Kubart proves that you can be infectious without being dangerous. The Sprout channel host (and former member of the Jimmies) has released his second collection of kid's songs, HOME. It's just as contagious as the first CD (with his band, the Space Cadets) and he's hitting the road to promote the album's 14 tracks.
The album's central connecting thread is the powerful, comforting location where every kid feels most at ease; that is, their own physical space. In tracks like "Last Turn Home," "Rooms," and "Moving Day," Tim draws on experiences both personal and common, to examine the visceral, overwhelming sense of calm and happiness that come with knowing there's a loving destination at the end of a long afternoon, school day, or vacation. With my own living situation in flux, I immediately empathized and drew strength from "Moving Day," which closes the CD:
Mom said it's hard to leave so many things
But our hearts are full of everything we're bringing.
Moving day
It's what we take away.
Fellow Sprout-ster Carly Ciarrocchi pops up to harmonize on the disco-fied "Breakfast Club." Postmodern Jukebox's Drue Davis rocks out and raps on "Sunday Crafternoon." Children's recording superstar Laurie Berkner makes a guest appearance on "Better," singing about how love makes any place a home. The final funky thread is the album's salsa-tinged "Dancing in the Kitchen," which begs for an accompanying video. Speaking of videos, I pledged to produce a family project featuring my two kids for the younger one's birthday in November, using Tim's unabashedly blissful ode to new family additions, "Biggest Brother."
Perhaps Tim is most comfortable relating to children. Perhaps Tim never grew up and seeks to continue to mine those interests as a lifelong career. Tim has tapped into the inner child that most of us reluctantly part with as our tween years unfold. Tim's childlike sense of wonder and enthusiasm guide his vision and make his music faithfully fun and family-friendly.
HOME is available on September 25 from Tim's website, Amazon, PledgeMusic, and iTunes. Click here to listen to the track "Last Turn Home."
Here is a preview video that Tim released for his song, "Better":

Who Likes The Not-Its? Raise Your Hand!
It's tough to grow up and give up the tropes of childhood – sandboxes, imaginary friends, seeing things from a different perspective, height-wise and otherwise. But wait a minute! What if you could grow up and still have a kid-friendly perspective? Well, then you would be in The Not-Its, the kids' power-punk group from Seattle.
The kindie universe is jam-packed with musicians whose press kits include phrases such as "Formerly with the Beatles and now a data analyst..." or "After touring the world with Guns 'N Roses, she now teaches zumba to seniors." While not as grandiose, the Not-Its roster features lead singer Sarah Shannon (from Velocity Girl, now the proprietor of Rockaboo music and movement), guitarist Danny Adamson (ex-punker turned realtor), guitarist Tom Baisden (special needs elementary school teacher), bassist Jennie Helman (HR professional), and drummer Michael Welke (from Harvey Danger, currently working with a design firm).

Kindie rock has countless acts who show up, sans amplification, and still faithfully replicate the songs from their CDs. Not so for The Not-Its. With their full throttle rock sensibilities, it's hard to imagine a stripped-down set of their tunes (unless they've got that planned for a very special live album). Their fifth CD, RAISE YOUR HAND, further entrenches their standing as the gatekeepers to "real" rock. I can't see the natural progression from, say, Laurie Berkner to Alanis Morrissette. But I can draw a clear line from The Not-Its to Fall Out Boy or Weezer.
The Not-Its bring back fond memories of their former East Coast contemporaries, the Jimmies. However, that group was more of a concept based around lead singer and song writer Ashley Albert. As Ashley moved on to new projects, the Jimmies have taken a lengthy sabbatical. in the meantime, The Not-Its are ably filling the void. The band delivers their take on same-sex couples with "Love Is Love," tackles education in "Nose in a Book," and everyday accidents on "When I Fell (The Scab Song)." The former punkers even take the time to mourn the past in the nostalgic "Hey 80s":
Neon tutus twirling so pretty in pink
Lucky Star was playing at the roller skating rink
I can't solve this Rubik's Cube
Who am I gonna call? The Ghostbusters are breakdancing
While playing Donkey Kong.
"The Waiting List" recites a litany of kids' frustrations at not getting to do something immediately. Classroom participation provided RAISE YOUR HAND's title track. Since we're dealing with a three-year-old who is terrified of the barber, our sympathies were with the band on "Haircut." In all, the CD contains 15 smartly compacted rock songs. Not lessons. Not messages (although they're there). The Not-Its are performing for kids, not teaching them. Raise your own darn kids. And while you're at it, take the time to RAISE YOUR HAND.
RAISE YOUR HAND is available on Tuesday, July 15 from The Not-Its' website, Amazon, CDBABY, and iTunes.

They're It! (Despite Being the Not-Its)
There's a lot of rock music out there and there's a lot of children's music out there.
That doesn't mean, when you mash it up, that there's a lot of GOOD children's rock music out there.
Fortunately, the Not-Its! have returned with KIDQUAKE!, another sonic boom of kidtastic tunes for your little ones. It's perfect for them to flail their long (isn't it about time for a haircut?) hair and shout (but with an inside kind of voice).
The Seattle-based quintet carved their baby teeth on the 90s indie-pop scene. Lead singer Sarah Shannon was lead vocalist for Velocity Girl. Rhythm guitarist Danny Adamson is a former punk rocker-turned-social worker. Guitarist Tom Baisden teaches special needs children. New members include indie band vet bassist Jennie Helman and drummer Michael Welke (formerly of Harvey Danger).
We were disappointed that the last time the Not-Its! played on the East Coast, it was at the Kindiefest showcase (the evening one for the adults). Ben had been selecting the band's songs over and over again for his playlists and I decided against telling him he would NOT be seeing them in the near future.
KIDQUAKE is stuffed with 11 songs in less than 30 minutes. You get all the rock and none of the "experimental" filler. You won't find a three-minute guitar solo to use as a bathroom break (although your kids might need one before playing the entire CD).
Topics include the wry ("Participation Trophy") and instructional ("Rock Paper Scissors"). You also get school-related creepiness ("Tarantula Funeral") and all-out fun times ("Busy" and "Let's Skateboard"). Anyone with a sibling will recognize the antagonist of "Temper Tantrum":
He's about to blow better hit the deck
You never know where the pieces of his rage will land
It's really getting out of hand.
How was I to know? No one can predict his lava flow.
It's getting hot. Is that the temperature? - no.
Must be a temper tantrum.
The Not-Its! remind me of a West Coast version of the Jimmies, similar rock tendencies and attitude. And they have their own version of a "posse" in the Kindiependent collective that includes Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey, and the Harmonica Pocket. With friends like those, it's easy to see what inspires the band to continue their mission to entertain the tykes. If your kids play the CD and the floor starts rocking, it's going to be tough to contain them. I guess that's what they mean by a KIDQUAKE!
KIDQUAKE! will be available on Tuesday, February 5 through the band's website, Amazon, CDBABY, and iTunes.

Clean Shave for Zak Morgan's Beastly Kids CD
I'm not close-minded. There is the stereotype of getting older and
liking fewer and fewer things. You break that stereotype by having
children, and being (sometimes forcibly) introduced to new things. And
y'know what? Many new things turn out to be pretty darn good.
Which brings me to Zak Morgan. The Cincinnati, Ohio-based native opens his new CD, THE BARBER OF THE BEASTS, with an orchestrated "Overture," then proceeds right into "First Grade:"
I eat my lunch at school
I gobble up my gruel
I feel like a jewel now that I'm in first grade.
This is where we learn and play
We get recess twice a day
Everyone should find a way to be in the first grade.
Seussical and clean, in the vein of Shel Silverstein. The title track tells the story of Nicola Picariello, who sets up his barber shop in the jungle and "can make a lion look like a French poodle." With strings and woodwinds in addition to guitars and piano, Morgan creates a winning style of children's music that is unlike the majority of the popular current artists.
We are currently experiencing a renaissance in the children's music scene. Beethoven's Wig covers classical. The Jimmies handle rock. Dan Zanes is a gentlemen folksinger/storyteller. Every region and every country has their own local superstar, just waiting for the "big break" that takes them national a la Stevesongs. Perhaps Zak Morgan is ready for larger venues outside the Ohio Valley.
Morgan cut his musical teeth performed for family audiences at Paradise Guest Ranch in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. He moved to New York City in 1995 to work for Recorded Books, a leading publisher of audiobooks, and spent four years immersed in the rich offerings of children's literature. His second CD, WHEN BULLFROGS CROAK, received a Grammy nomination, a rare feat for an independent release.
"The White Shark's Chum" tells a tale about a pirate (Captain Yum), a clever girl (Fast Phoebe), and a predator that follows the vessel bearing its name. Whenever someone walks the plant, they become fish food. Hence, the title of the song (and the boat). If you miss the point, Morgan even sings, "It's a double entendre."
Morgan is not all fun and games, though. He winds down the CD with a sweet ballad, "Let Me In:"
A human house of cards can crumble
But never when the heart is humble
Do you see the Light above you?
Do you know I'll always love you
Let me in
Morgan fills the niche between TUBBY THE TUBA and MEET THE ORCHESTRA. His tunes are filled with wordplay and don't stray far from their target audience, with an occasional wink for parents. THE BARBER OF THE BEASTS comes with a lavishly illustrated booklet, including lyrics with a twist: Specific words are highlighted and explained in a glossary to help expand your childrens' vocabularies. The song "Mister E" defines the words melancholy, mope, femme fatale, misanthrope, miscellaneous, misconstrue, and mistletoe, among others.
THE BARBER OF THE BEASTS is the fourth release from myKaZoo Music, a new family music label created in partnership with Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). Zak Morgan’s videos are in high rotation on myKaZooTV.com, their music video channel for kids.
